Yesterday my wife and I were talking to a neighbor who was passing by with her black lab. At the same moment the neighbor across the street unexpectedly came out from behind a tree with her large pure bred (some large copper colored poodle -as big as the lab). Next thing I hear "SMACK"! The 60ish lightweight woman is face down on the blacktop and the dogs are having a little "one-ups-man(dog)-ship". Not a battle - just some good natured fun with each other.
Thank heavens the lady got up and recovered - I had thought we were going to have to call an ambulance. It never ceases to amaze me how many people want large dogs but can't handle them.

Our 90+ pound yellow lab takes my 115 pound wife for a walk often. You can tell by the green knees and scrapes on the chin. My wife says the dog almost pulls her arms out of their sockets at times. She can control the dog unless it sees a cat, rabbit or squirrel. ....

Our lab was once 103 pounds of pure muscle. She took us for many a walks and if your not in command all the time she would take over! Now my poor little girl is down to 72 pounds and all crippled up. Just dont seem fair that their lives are so short. One day they are vibrant and full of p and v and the next they are lame and useless. LOL

I don't know many people not on steriods who can walk a huge, energetic dog without some occasional trouble. My parents had 2 dogs, both over 100 lbs and all muscle... I don't know anyone who could hold them back if the dog really wanted to chase something.
The solutions are just good training and if that fails, lots of band-aids. ....

Funchy, I guess I can understand how it is so difficult to hold these dogs back. But I think you should have a 150-200 lb muscular and physically fit person in the family before you get a dog like this. My in-laws had a black lab that happily ran up our basement steps and actually knocked the basement door right off its hinges once!
I just am amazed that I seem to know lots of elderly people that get these large dogs and I know one, at least, that has to now get rid of the dog. They think the larger the better, until you face the fact of what it really takes to raise these dogs. The person I am thinking of now has a Burmese Mountain dog - it is huge and the elderly lady can no longer control the dog. Also - many folks seem to send these dogs to obedience school and, because they are not firm with the dog, the training is soon lost. They want to be the dogs friend rather than the master. ....

Brokenarrow,
How old is your Lab. My Chocolate Lab is about 103 also, he is 12 and is getting stiff in the joints and the last couple of days has lost his appetite a bit. My yellow Lab died at 12, and her descent was precipitous as well.
